Saltbox Roof

A saltbox roof is similar to a gable roof, but has different slopes and/or spans for the front and rear sides of the roof. This will result in one wall being higher than the other.

To Calculate a Saltbox Roof

Select Saltbox from the Roof Type dropdown list or select the corresponding button on the toolbar. The preview window displays an elevation view of the roof that updates dynamically to reflect the actual dimensions of the roof, including the difference in elevation between the front and rear wall plates.

Design Tab

Slope

Enter or select the slopes for the front and rear roofs.

Front Span/Rear Span

Enter the spans of the front and rear common rafters. Do not subtract for the thickness of the ridge board, Easy Rafters will perform that calculation automatically.

Overhang

Enter the horizontal overhangs including the fascia thickness for the front and rear common rafters.

Heel & Seat

Accept the default heel height and seat cut dimensions for each rafter or override the defaults by locking one or the other and entering the desired measurement.

Kneewalls

Easy Rafters can calculate the birdsmouth for kneewalls on the front and/or rear rafters. Make sure the button to the right of the kneewall field is checked and enter the distance from the outside edge of the wall to the face of the kneewall. The kneewall birdsmouth will use the same heel and seat dimensions as the bottom birdsmouth.

Lumber Sizes

Enter the lumber sizes for the front and rear common rafters, the ridge board, and the fascia boards. If no ridge board is used enter zero for the thickness of the ridge or select "No Ridge/Purlin".
